Health Benefits of Pickleball

by Joshua Bardez, Redwoods Pickleball

Many of us know about the benefits of exercise. We know that exercise, eating healthy, and seeing our physician regularly, are the three keys to healthy aging.

The fundamental aspect of exercise is exercising regularly. We all have many reasons for not exercising. We all usually use one or more too often. One of them is it isn’t fun (jogging, weight lifting, swimming, treadmill, walking.)

What we need to put the fun back into our exercising routine, with a low-impact exercise that works all our muscle groups without undue stress. That increases our heart rate without being winded. Also, one that causes a caloric burn without overstressing the body and releasing much-needed nutrients.

The exercise should consist of a low-impact aerobic exercise that helps release much-needed endorphins, bioamines, and nutrients and releases the feel-good chemical – dopamine: A program that helps with balance and hand and eye coordination while enjoying the exercise in a social environment.

Pickleball offers a wide array of these health benefits. It improves your agility and ability to change direction, which supports other fitness endeavors and everyday chores. Improves hand-eye coordination that helps with daily living and other sports, such as golf.

Hand and eye coordination are important, and it’s required for many simple daily activities like eating or driving. As you age, balance is in peril, but essential to maintain to help with basic tasks such as, putting on your socks, and pants, tying your shoes, and balancing or getting up from a sitting position and help avoid slips and falls. Pickleball helps with that as well. Also, you don’t need a high-intensity workout to get your blood flowing.

Pickleball moderately elevates our heart rate to get blood flowing, increasing energy and spreading nutrients throughout the body without being winded. That gives us a slow and steady caloric burn for those trying to manage their weight.

Pickleball boosts the cardiovascular system that helps prevent many of the unwanted problems of aging, like hypertension, stroke, and heart attack. Pickleball gives you an aerobic workout without too much stress and strain on your joints and muscles.

With all exercise, including pickleball, you release endorphins, dopamine, and other bioamines that are essential in elevating your self-esteem and combating depression – both problems that can come with aging.

Many seniors are attracted to the sport because it is easy to play, very social, and less stressful on muscles, tendons, and joints. With the health benefits of moderate exercise (which is recommended by most Doctors,) pickleball is a go-to exercise program for many. Many who were active, who for physical reasons can no longer can participate in their sport, have gravitated to the game of pickleball. Helping them to live an independent life a little longer.

Play pickleball, a low-impact moderate exercise, that is fun with health benefits that enhance your mind, body, and spirit.
